Health Insurance

WPA health insurance over 50 is it worth it?

WPA is a not-for-profit health insurer with over 120 years of history, the highest Trustpilot rating of any UK health insurer, and a flexible Complete Health policy. Here's how it costs, compares, and works for people over 50.

  • Compare WPA against other leading providers
  • Access expert advice on which policy suits your circumstances
  • No pressure to proceed

Is WPA health insurance worth it for over 50s?

For most people over 50 who want flexible, well-reviewed private medical cover, WPA is worth considering. It's a not-for-profit insurer with the highest Trustpilot rating of any UK health insurer (4.7 out of 5) and a 97% claims approval rate.

  • WPA has no maximum joining age, though anyone joining at 66 or over must take a minimum £500 excess and accept Full Medical Underwriting
  • Premiums for over 50s commonly range from £75-£350+ a month, depending on age, cover level, location, and excess
  • The unique Shared Responsibility option can make comprehensive cover more affordable by capping how much you contribute towards each claim

If wellness rewards or the most advanced health app matter most to you, Vitality or Aviva may be a better fit. If customer service, claims experience, and flexible cover matter most, WPA is generally regarded as one of the strongest options on the market.

About WPA

WPA traces its roots back to 1901, when a group of workers founded the Reading Work People's Voluntary Hospital Contributory Fund to help members cover medical expenses. The organisation merged with the Bristol Hospital Fund in 1939 and became the Western Provident Association in 1949. Today, WPA is headquartered in Taunton, Somerset, and covers over 460,000 members across the UK.

What makes WPA different from insurers like Aviva or AXA is its structure. As a provident association, WPA has no shareholders. Any financial surplus gets reinvested back into member services, benefits, and keeping premiums competitive. This member-first approach shapes everything from policy design to claims handling.

WPA specialises exclusively in health insurance products - it doesn't sell car insurance, home insurance, or life cover. This focused approach means the whole organisation is built around understanding and supporting health insurance customers.

Regulation and financial security

WPA is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Your policy is also protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, meaning you're covered for up to £85,000 per person if WPA were ever unable to pay claims.

WPA Complete Health policy explained

WPA offers one main private medical insurance product for individuals and families, called Complete Health. Rather than forcing you to choose between rigid policy tiers, Complete Health uses a modular system where you select a base level and then add optional extras to build the cover that fits your circumstances.

Core (entry level)

The Core plan covers the essentials most people need from private health insurance:

  • Full inpatient and day-patient treatment (hospital stays and same-day procedures)
  • £250 towards outpatient specialist consultations per year
  • MRI, CT, and PET scans as a core benefit
  • Remote GP service via phone or video
  • Health and wellbeing helpline
  • NHS cash benefit of up to £4,500 per year if you choose NHS treatment instead

Core works well if you want protection against major medical expenses but are happy to pay for most outpatient appointments yourself.

Mid-Range

Mid-Range adds more comprehensive coverage on top of everything in Core:

  • Comprehensive cancer care with no financial caps on tests and treatments
  • Increased outpatient consultations, up to £1,000
  • £1,000 towards outpatient diagnostic tests
  • £500 towards therapies such as physiotherapy
  • Cash contributions towards optical, dental, and audiology care

Mid-Range suits people who want confidence that diagnostics and cancer treatment won't be limited by low benefit caps.

Comprehensive

The top tier removes most limits entirely, adding to everything in Mid-Range:

  • Unlimited outpatient consultations
  • Unlimited outpatient diagnostic tests
  • Unlimited therapies
  • Mental health cover
  • Some overseas cover
  • Access to premium London hospitals

Comprehensive is designed for those who want complete coverage with minimal financial surprises when they need to claim.

Optional extras you can add

One of WPA's strengths is how much you can customise your policy. Optional extras include:

  • Enhanced cancer cover - advanced treatments including targeted therapies not yet available on the NHS
  • Mental health cover - outpatient therapy, structured counselling, or hospital treatment up to 28 days
  • Premium hospitals - access to over 1,000 facilities, including prestigious Central London hospitals
  • Dental and optical cash benefits - contributions towards routine dental and eye care
  • Therapies - physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, and acupuncture with various benefit limits
  • Travel cover - emergency medical treatment abroad, excluding the US
  • Winter sports cover - treatment for injuries from skiing and other winter activities

These are indicative figures. Your actual quote will depend on your specific circumstances, location, and chosen options.

Location makes a real difference

WPA, like most insurers, charges more if you live in areas with higher medical costs. London premiums can be 50-60% higher than the national average, while Scotland, Northern England, and Yorkshire tend to be 15-25% below average. If you live outside London and don't need access to Central London's premium hospitals, you can reduce your premium by excluding them from your hospital list.

How to reduce your WPA premium

  • Choose a higher excess - selecting a £500 excess instead of no excess can reduce premiums by 15-47%, depending on your age. Younger policyholders tend to see the biggest percentage savings.
  • Use the Shared Responsibility option - WPA's co-payment model works differently from a traditional excess. You pay 25% of each eligible claim, WPA pays 75%, and your contributions are capped at a limit you choose (for example £250, £500, £1,000, £1,500, or £5,000). Once you hit your cap, WPA pays 100% for the rest of the policy year. For example, if you choose a £1,000 annual cap and have a £2,000 claim, you pay £500 (25%) and WPA pays £1,500. Any further claims that year are covered in full by WPA.
  • Exclude premium hospitals - if you don't live or work near Central London, excluding premium London hospitals from your policy can reduce costs without significantly affecting access to quality care.
  • Limit outpatient cover - choosing a lower outpatient limit, or the Core plan with £250 outpatient cover, reduces premiums while maintaining full protection for expensive inpatient treatment.

Expert insight

Lawrence Howlett

Work out your realistic worst-case contribution before choosing a Shared Responsibility cap. A £250 cap gives you more certainty but costs more upfront, while a £1,500 or £5,000 cap lowers your premium but means you could pay significantly more if you need extensive treatment in a single policy year.

Claims process

How to make a WPA claim

1

Get a referral

Visit your NHS GP for a diagnosis and an open referral to a specialist.

2

Contact WPA

Call or use the WPA Health app to get your consultation and treatment authorised.

3

Book your appointment

Choose any specialist from WPA's approved list.

4

Attend treatment

WPA pays the provider directly in most cases, so there's usually nothing to pay upfront.

5

Submit any receipts

If you've paid for anything yourself, claim it back through the app.

WPA claims process and customer experience

This is where WPA genuinely excels. Its claims process consistently receives outstanding feedback, and it's the main reason WPA tops customer satisfaction surveys.

What customers say about claims

  • Claims approved quickly, often within 24-48 hours
  • Phone calls answered in under 2 minutes on average
  • 97% of claims approved
  • Staff described as knowledgeable, empathetic, and efficient
  • The app makes submitting receipts and tracking claims straightforward

Common feedback themes include praise for how clearly staff explain the process, how quickly claims are settled, and the difference private treatment makes to waiting times compared with the NHS. Occasional criticisms mention price increases at renewal, occasional delays for complex cases, and a more limited choice of hospitals in certain regions.

The WPA Health app

The WPA Health app lets you:

  • Submit and track claims
  • Book remote GP consultations by phone or video
  • Access your policy documents
  • Find approved specialists and hospitals
  • Manage your account details
  • Use the Health and Wellbeing Helpline

While functional and well-reviewed, the app is more basic than the apps offered by Vitality or Aviva, which include more extensive health tracking and wellness features.

Get a WPA quote and see how it compares

An advisor can get your WPA quote and compare it against Bupa, Aviva, AXA, and Vitality so you can see the full picture before deciding.

Hospital and specialist access

WPA provides access to one of the most extensive hospital networks among UK health insurers.

Standard hospital list

All WPA Complete Health policies include access to:

  • All BMI Healthcare hospitals
  • All Nuffield Health hospitals
  • All Spire Healthcare hospitals
  • All Ramsay Health Care hospitals
  • Independent private hospitals
  • Private wings of NHS hospitals

This covers over 600 hospitals and clinics across the UK.

Premium hospitals option

For an additional premium, you can add access to over 1,000 facilities, including prestigious Central London hospitals such as The Cromwell Hospital, The London Clinic, and HCA facilities. Most people living outside London won't need this option, but it's valuable if you want access to specialists who only practise in the capital.

Freedom to choose your specialist

Unlike some insurers that guide you towards specific specialists, WPA allows you to choose any recognised specialist in any approved facility. This flexibility is a key selling point - you're not restricted to whoever the insurer suggests.

What WPA doesn't cover

Like all private health insurance, WPA has exclusions. Understanding these upfront prevents disappointment when you need to claim.

Standard exclusions on all policies

  • Pre-existing conditions - any condition you had symptoms, treatment, or advice for before your policy started
  • Chronic conditions - long-term conditions requiring ongoing management, such as diabetes, asthma, COPD, or arthritis
  • Pregnancy and childbirth - routine maternity care, though complications may be covered
  • Fertility treatment - IVF and related procedures
  • Cosmetic procedures - unless medically necessary after an accident or illness
  • Allergies - testing and treatment for allergies
  • Emergency treatment - this is what the NHS handles, not private insurance
  • Experimental treatments - unproven therapies not yet established
  • Drug and alcohol rehabilitation - addiction treatment programmes

Age-related restrictions

  • Joining over 65 - you must take a minimum £500 excess and join on Full Medical Underwriting
  • Targeted cancer therapies - if you join aged 66 or over, certain advanced cancer treatments aren't covered

How underwriting works

When you apply, WPA assesses your medical history through one of three methods.

Moratorium Underwriting (most common) - you don't need to detail your medical history upfront. Instead, any condition you've had symptoms, treatment, or advice for in the previous 5 years is automatically excluded. The exclusion lifts if you go 2 continuous years without needing treatment for that condition.

Full Medical Underwriting - you complete a detailed health questionnaire. WPA reviews your history and permanently excludes specific conditions. This gives certainty from day one about what's covered.

Switch Terms - if you're moving from another insurer, WPA can match your existing exclusions rather than starting fresh.

Choosing private health insurance doesn't affect your entitlement to NHS care. You can continue using your NHS GP and NHS services for anything not covered by your policy, alongside your private cover.

Good to know

Lawrence Howlett

If you have any historic health conditions, it's worth asking about Full Medical Underwriting instead of accepting the default Moratorium terms. It costs nothing extra to request and tells you exactly what's excluded from day one, rather than leaving you to work out whether a 5-year lookback period might catch a condition out.

Advantages

Advantages of WPA health insurance

Exceptional customer service

WPA consistently tops customer satisfaction surveys, with UK-based staff and a personal approach that stands apart from larger, more corporate insurers.

Not-for-profit structure

With no shareholders to satisfy, WPA can focus on member benefits. Surpluses are reinvested in the business rather than paid out as dividends.

Highly flexible policies

The modular Complete Health system lets you build the cover you need, and the Shared Responsibility option can make comprehensive cover more affordable.

Outstanding claims approval

A 97% claims approval rate, with consistently positive feedback about the process being straightforward.

Freedom to choose

Select any recognised specialist in any approved hospital, rather than being steered towards particular consultants or facilities.

Strong hospital network

Access to all major UK private hospital groups, with the option to add premium London facilities.

Pros and cons of WPA health insurance

WPA's strengths and weaknesses are fairly consistent across reviews and customer feedback. The advantages above are the main draw. Here's what to weigh up on the other side.

Disadvantages

  • Not always the cheapest - while competitively priced, WPA isn't a budget insurer. The Exeter or basic Bupa plans may work out cheaper if price is your main concern.
  • No wellness rewards programme - unlike Vitality, WPA doesn't offer cinema tickets, coffee, or gym discounts for healthy behaviour.
  • Less advanced digital tools - the WPA app is functional but more basic than Aviva's or Vitality's health tracking and digital GP features.
  • Renewal price increases - some customers report noticeable price rises at renewal, particularly after making a claim. This is common across the industry but worth factoring in.
  • Higher premiums in London - if you live in London and want premium hospital access, you'll pay considerably more than someone based in the regions.

Who should choose WPA?

WPA's combination of flexible cover, strong claims service, and member-first structure suits a particular type of buyer more than others.

Ideal for

Who WPA health insurance suits

People who value customer service above all

If your biggest fear about health insurance is fighting to get claims paid, WPA's outstanding service record provides genuine reassurance.

Budget-conscious buyers seeking quality

The Shared Responsibility model can make comprehensive cover more affordable than traditional policies from competitors.

Those wanting an ethical, member-first insurer

WPA's not-for-profit structure appeals to people who want their premiums going into care rather than shareholder dividends.

Families

WPA doesn't offer family discounts, but its flexible cover and strong claims service work well for families who want reliable protection.

Self-employed professionals

The ability to tailor cover precisely to your needs and budget suits people paying their own premiums.

People who want to choose their own specialist

WPA's open referral approach means you're not limited to whoever the insurer suggests.

Who might want to consider alternatives

WPA won't be the right fit for everyone. It might not suit:

  • Those seeking the absolute lowest price - budget insurers like The Exeter may offer cheaper premiums if cost is your primary concern
  • Wellness programme enthusiasts - if you're motivated by rewards for healthy behaviour, Vitality offers far more in this area
  • People wanting the most advanced digital tools - Aviva and Vitality have more sophisticated health apps and digital GP services
  • Those needing extensive pre-existing condition cover - like all insurers, WPA excludes pre-existing conditions, and The Exeter is often more flexible in this area
